HISTORY EARLY BULLDOGS IN THE 17th & 18th CENTURY WERE USED IN THE SPORT OF BULL BATING. SOME OF THESE DOG TRAVELED FROM ENGLAND TO AMERICA WITH THEIR MASTERS. THE ENGLISH BULLDOG WAS BRED DOWN IN SIZE BY MIXING IT WITH THE PUG AFTER THE SPORT OF BULL BATING WAS BANNED IN 1835. IT WAS ACTUALLY A SIGN OF WEALTH TO OWN A SMALLER DOG IN ENGLAND AT THIS TIME. THE AMERICAN BULLDOG REMAINED UNCHANGED STILL THE LARGER, FIERCER MORE AGILE DOG IT ORIGINALLY BRED FOR , COMPARED TO THE ENGLISH LAP DOG OF TODAY. THE STORY IS AFTER JOHN RETURNED FROM THE WAR HE WAS SADDENED TO SEE THAT THE DOG WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY EXTINCT SO THEN HE DECIDED TO GATHER THE BEST AROUND IN THE RURAL SOUTH AND BEGAN BREEDING THEM AND HAS BEEN EVER SINCE. THE AMERICAN BULLDOG WAS ALSO USED AS A GUARD DOG AND IN HUNTING WILD BOAR, RACCOON, AND EVEN THE BEAR! THEY WHERE ALSO TRAINED BY FARMERS TO DRIVE CATTLE AND GUARD THEM FROM PREDATORS. FARMERS PRIZE THEIR STANIMA, PROTECTIVENESS , INTELLIGENCE AND WORKING ABILTYS. CONFUSION WITH OTHER BREEDS
There are two distinct strains of American Bulldogs, the Johnson, or Bully type and Standard (Scott, Performance type) which is often mistaken for the American pit bull terrier because of its appearance, and because of its name. The American Bulldog is different from any of these. The American Bulldog is much larger and more massive in comparison to the french bulldog or English bulldog as it still resembles the old English bulldog and was never down bred to be a lap dog. The Standard American Bulldog does resemble a giant pitbull in some ways, such as being muscular dogs that can be all white or white with patches. However, the pit bulls head is in the shape of a wedge coming to a more rounded point at the muzzle, whereas an American Bulldog's is a wider more box-shaped. The American Bulldog's ears are also typically uncropped, and its head is heavier and bulkier. The johnson is the larger more aggressive looking one much larger bone structure looks like a healthy giant English bulldog short muzzle but not so smashed in to prevent him form breathing very buff chest beautiful dog essentially a Dino type! In general, American Bulldogs weigh between (60 to 135lb) and are (20 to 28 in) at the withers males are often much larger than the females. But as in all living things there are some freaks claim to weigh over 150 lbs and over 30 in tall wow!
TEMPERAMENT
The essential characteristics of the American Bulldog are those which enable it to work as a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property. These tasks require a powerful, agile, confident dog with a large head and powerful jaws. The American Bulldog is a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder; Good with children.
